The Legacy of DB Concrete: From David Bivens to Kevin Brown

DB Concrete began as a vision brought to life by David Bivens, a pioneer who laid the groundwork for
what would become a staple in the construction industry. David’s dedication to quality and his deep
understanding of the craft set the standard for excellence that the company still upholds today.

As DB Concrete grew, David saw the potential for even greater things and passed the torch to Kevin
Brown. With over 30 years of experience in the building industry, Kevin brought a builder’s perspective to the concrete business. Raised in Austin and armed with a BS degree in Construction Management, Kevin’s approach was holistic—he didn’t just see concrete as a single phase of construction but as an integral part of the entire building process. His experience as Vice President of
Construction &; Purchasing for a large national homebuilder, along with his years running KB Custom
Homes, allowed him to refine his skills and apply them to DB Concrete, enhancing its reputation and
expanding its capabilities.

Kevin’s understanding of what’s needed during the concrete phase—from a builder’s viewpoint, not
just as a contractor—added tremendous value. His focus on ensuring that the work supported the
trades that followed made DB Concrete a reliable partner in the construction process.

James Thurston: Continuing the DB Concrete Legacy

Following the strong foundation laid by David Bivens and Kevin Brown, I, James Thurston, have had the privilege of continuing the legacy of DB Concrete. My journey into this role has been shaped by over 20 years of experience in home building. As the owner of a design-build firm, I relocated my family to Austin in search of a better way of life. In Austin, I worked with a premier design-build firm for seven years, wearing many hats—starting in production, moving to sales and estimating, and finally returning to production, where I discovered my passion for concrete.

When the opportunity arose to take over DB Concrete from Kevin, I knew it was the perfect fit. My
extensive background in homebuilding has given me a unique perspective, understanding the
importance of every phase in construction and how they interconnect. This understanding has fueled
my passion for concrete, driving me to bring the same level of detail and care to every project that
David and Kevin did before me.

In addition to my extensive experience, I hold Certified Remodeler (CR) and Certified Remodeler
Project Manager (CRPM) certifications from the National Association of the Remodeling Industry
(NARI). These credentials reflect my commitment to upholding the highest standards in construction
and project management.
